Rock n' Roll Friday started simply because the acupuncture clinic reception and shop areas were quiet and needed music. 🎵 I bought a clinic turntable so I could avoid linking into the music streaming service that played music in the treatment rooms, and brought a small selection of records from home to play sporadically through the week.
At the same time, I was getting tired of wearing scrubs. In fact, I didn't enjoy wearing them at all because they have limited personality and I like to be myself. One Friday morning I decided to ditch the scrubs and wear a band T-shirt. I figured my patients who are into music might know the band or it would at least be a conversation piece. That day I coordinated my band T-shirt with the record I spun. Patients commented. We talked about the artist and music. Those conversations helped me get to know them on a whole new level.
That's when I decided the clinic would have casual Friday with band T-shirts and vinyl, but I'd call it Rock n' Roll Friday.
Rock n' Roll Friday has become something that people look forward to. Patients come in and ask, “What are you playing today?," or someone outside of the clinic will mention they saw Friday's record on the clinic social media and strike up a conversation about it. Patients have suggested records, brought in their favorite record, told me stories about seeing that week's featured band, and have gifted me records.
Even though Rock n' Roll Friday started as something personal for me, it became another way to connect with patients and the community.
